Student and Family Support Program:
The Student and Family Support Program (SFSP) provides targeted academic and social emotional support for teen mothers during and after school, without which they are more likely to disengage from the school community and perform poorly academically. SFSP staff use a framework model uniquely designed for teen mothers to (1) provide additional opportunities for academic growth through tutoring, concurrent enrollment, and post-secondary readiness, (2) help them continue to develop the skills they need to transition successfully from high school to college and a career, and (3) maintain family and community engagement through out-of-school activities.
The SFSP operates out of our new and expanded Family Services Center, which has additional space customized for life skills and parenting classes, counseling, group work, leadership training and career readiness workshops. It also features dedicated space for community partners and volunteers to provide an array of additional financial, legal and counseling services.
SFSP activities include:
Life skills and Leadership Training
Out-of-school activities organized to target life skills and leadership development through parenting education and playgroups, one-on-one family counseling services and support groups, child-abuse-and-neglect prevention, domestic abuse prevention, and stress management workshops.
Health and Wellness
Other out-of-school activities address the health, nutrition, and wellness needs of our teen mothers and their children and include yoga, dance, self-defense classes, child playgroup, health and nutrition fairs, breast feeding/perinatal support, and cooking classes.
Family Engagement Activities
Various out-of-school events are offered and focus on promoting healthy familial behaviors and strengthening inter-generational relationships. Events occur on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis and include mother/father activities, family literacy events, cultural celebrations, Grandparent Coffees, Fall Festival, Holiday Celebration, and an outdoor Field Day.
Summer Enrichment Activities
Teen mothers are kept academically engaged over summer break with out-of-school activities focused on literacy, language development, parent-child bonding, and creativity, leadership and critical thinking skills. Teen families also experience cultural enrichment through summer field trips.
